DEHN Protects Wind Turbines

The necessary height of wind generators that exposes them to the driving force of the wind also exposes them the damaging and destructive effects of lightning. Large multi mega Watt generators with blade tips as high as 200 meters above the ground appear as lightning rods to passing storms. Unless properly protected against the effects of lightning, the electrical systems can easily become non-functioning, and lose their ability to generate revenue, as well as require expensive equipment replacement, including all the labor and rigging cost associated with such repairs.

In 2010 DEHN is celebrating its 100th anniversary in the business of lightning and surge protection. During this period of time DEHN has made major advances in product development as a result of its research, laboratory work, involvement in international technical symposiums and standards groups, and sharing this information with its clients in the form of white paper, presentations, and a large range of printed publications.

DEHN has worked specifically with wind turbine manufacturers understanding the specific issues associated with them and providing unique solution for this specific industry which have resulted in the development of concepts of approved lightning protection systems, which drastically reduce lightning damage to blades, bearings and gear units as well as the measurement and control and power system found in wind generators.

DEHN offers a large range of standard products as well as customized solutions for the protection of wind generator systems against the effects of lightning. DEHN offers engineering and test services in our custom laboratories in order to optimize customer specific solutions for wind energy systems.

DEHN's wind SPDs includes the Dehnguard Modular - DG M WE 600. This is a complete prewired unit designed for use in wind turbines that allows for temporary voltage fluctuations due to increased rated varistor voltage U§mov, it has a high discharge capacity due to its powerful zinc oxide varistors, it offers high reliability due to the "Thermo Dynamic Control", has an SPD monitoring device indicating its operating status/fault indication of every protective circuit, has multifunctional terminals for connecting conductors and bus bars, allows for easy replacing of protection modules without tools due to module locking system with releasing button and is tested to withstand mechanical vibration- and shock.

DEHN also offers a complete range of SPDs for instrumentation circuits, control circuits and communications circuits.
