Circuit breaker panels, however, have a dead front cover that prevents accidental contact with live conductors when the main cover is opened. Therefore all DEHN protectors feature a clear Lexan dead front cover behind the main hinged cover. The dead front cover prevents accidental contact with live conductors, and allows safe access for parts replacement.

Hardwire surge protectors typically incorporate a fuse with a rating of 30 amperes or higher. In the event of a substained voltage swell above the turn on voltage of the MOV based protector, significant current can flow without activating the fuse, causing the MOV to overheat and become a fire hazard. In order to eliminate such fires in its surge protectors, DEHN surge protectors are designed to protect themselves at any current level which can be continuously conducted by the surge protector's fuse without resulting in dangerous overheating. To acheive this, DEHN incorporates a thermal switch in all DEHNguard MOV protection elements. When a substained overvoltage swell above the MOV turn on voltage occurs, the thermal switch activates and safetly disconnects the MOV from the line voltage.

This device provides a means to ensure that the circuit to the surge protector is open when required and provides for ease of fuse replacement.
